Film experience in the palace tower
I, Karl Wilhelm! The legend of my city is truly worth seeing, and hearing: Thanks to the projection screen in the tower room’s cinema, which is 18.5 meters wide and over 3 meters high, visitors are transported back to the Baroque period, where they get to take a look inside the thoughts and speeches of Karlsruhe's legendary founder, Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach.
The 23 minute film starts with a dream sequence. Margrave Karl Wilhelm reflects on the founding of his city, which he designed to his own specifications. The film traces a story based on many historical events, freely linked together in an imaginative way. It focuses on a prize Karl Wilhelm is planning to award. Three members of his court are candidates for the gold medal: Court gardener Christian Thran for Karlsruhe's gardens, court singer Dorothea Adam as representative of courtly music, and the experimenter, alchemist Georg von Welling for the realm of science. Top level actors were hired to create the film experience: The role of Karl Wilhelm is voiced by Ben Becker, winner of multiple Grimme prizes and the Golden Camera. Viewings of the film start each hour, and can be booked for group visits.
